Lipika Documentation

Everything you need to install, master and troubleshoot Lipika — written like a modern palm-leaf manuscript: clear, calm and complete.

Introduction

Lipika is a professional desktop application for Unicode Odia ⇄ Akruti conversion, built for DTP operators, printing presses, publishers, educational institutions and government offices.

Unlike online converters, Lipika is designed around four principles:

  • Reliability — deterministic, high-accuracy conversion you can depend on for publication.
  • Speed — live conversion as you type, with full pages converted in milliseconds.
  • Privacy — text is processed in memory on your machine and never transmitted.
  • Offline use — internet is required only once for licence activation; everything else runs locally.
Current release: v1.0.0 “Sarala”. This manual covers exactly what ships in that version.

To convert from Akruti-encoded files, the corresponding Akruti fonts must be installed on your system for correct on-screen rendering of the source text.

Installation

Installation takes under two minutes and requires no additional runtimes — everything Lipika needs is bundled.

Download the installer Get Lipika-Setup-1.0.0.exe from the Download page and verify the SHA-256 checksum if your policy requires it.

Run the installer Double-click the file. If SmartScreen appears, choose “More info → Run anyway” — the current build is unsigned.

Choose install location The default is C:\Program Files\Lipika. Accept or change it, then click Install.

Finish Optionally create a desktop shortcut. Lipika launches automatically when you click Finish.

First launch

When Lipika opens for the first time you’ll see the two-pane converter. The left pane is your source, the right pane is the converted output.

  1. Select the conversion direction from the toolbar: Unicode → Akruti or Akruti → Unicode.
  2. Paste text into the left pane — the output appears instantly on the right.
  3. Use Ctrl + C on the output pane or the Copy button to take the result anywhere.

Your theme, direction and window size are remembered automatically for the next session.

Converter

The converter is the heart of Lipika. It runs a dedicated, optimised engine locally.

Conversion directions

Unicode → Akruti maps standard Odia Unicode code points to legacy Akruti glyph sequences, including correct matra reordering. Akruti → Unicode performs the inverse mapping, reconstructing proper conjuncts.

Working with large documents

Paste or drop text of any practical length; the engine processes pages in milliseconds. Use the character, word and line counters beneath the panes to verify completeness after conversion.

Exporting

Click Download to save the converted text as a .txt file (UTF-8). For Akruti output destined for legacy DTP tools, paste directly into your layout application instead.

Troubleshooting

Output shows boxes or question marks

You are viewing Akruti output without the Akruti font installed. Install the legacy font family, or switch your target to Unicode.

Conversion looks wrong

Check the direction selector. Converting text that is already in the target encoding produces mojibake. If source text was copied from a PDF, ensure it copied as text — image-only PDFs require OCR, which is not included in v1.0.0.

The app won’t start

Confirm you are on Windows 7 SP1 or newer (64-bit). Reinstall using “Run as administrator”. If the problem persists, send us the log from %APPDATA%\Lipika\logs.

Antivirus warning

The current build is unsigned, which can trigger SmartScreen. Verify the SHA-256 checksum on the Download page, then allow the app.

FAQ

No. Text lives in memory while the app is open and is discarded when you close it. Nothing is written to disk or sent anywhere.
Yes — the engine handles very large documents. For books, convert chapter by chapter so you can proofread systematically. Folder-level batch automation is planned for a future release.
Use the Contact page and choose “Bug report”. Include a small sample of the affected text — samples are the fastest way to improve accuracy.
